Choosing a Rental Bike

There are many bicycle rental services available in various major cities and tourist attractions/destinations around the United States. Here are some things to ask or look for before selecting a bike rental service.

  • Type of Bicycle You Wish to Rent. Depending on the type of ride or tour that you will be going on, you should select a bicycle to fit your trip. Some bicycle rental shops will only carry single speed 'heavy bikes' or cruiser bikes which are fun to ride, but may be difficult to pedal if there are hills or slight inclines that will cause you to have to walk the bike up.
  • Frame sizes to match your height. Have your height measurement available when calling to reserve your bicycle to be sure the bike rental service has bicycle frames to match your stature.
  • Break Downs. In the event of a break down or some other event that causes the bicycle to be inoperable and not rideable, what are your options? The bicycle rental service should be willing to deliver a replacement bike within an hour or two free of charge or at least repair the problem.
  • Safety Equipment. In some metropolitan areas it has become city policy to require the use of certain cycling safety equipment. The use of a proper bicycle helmet is of utmost importance to your personal safety. Lighting and reflectors for visibility at night is also important for yourself and those around you. In some cases it is required to have one white, front light mounted on the bicycle when riding after dusk. Be sure to ask your bicycle rental shop if these items are included free of charge.
  • Security. If you plan to make stops and enjoy some local tourist spots or leave your bicycle unattended you should be prepared to lock your rented bicycle to a sturdy and immovable object. A simple bike lock should be provided to you free of charge. Be sure to ask.
  • Where to ride. You may already have a destination or trip plan made, however you may miss out on something truly unique by asking your local bicycle rental shop where they like to ride. Nothing beats a quick inside tip from the locals. A map or brochure may even be available to you as well.
  • Pricing and Discounts. Usually bicycles are rented on a daily rate, however some rental shops do have hourly and weekly rates. It is best to ask if there is a discount for multiple rental days such as over a weekend. Perhaps 1 free day with a 2 day weekend rental. Discounts may also be available to groups of 5 or more cyclists renting bikes.
  • More to come...
