After hearing about the Salado Creek Hike and Bike Trail from one of my customers on the southeast side of town, I thought about dusting off my bike, pump up the tires and check it out.

Salado Creek Greenway South

My grandson was visiting San Antonio for the summer, so we loaded the bikes on the pick-up and we headed out to Southside Lions Park East off of Pecan Valley. What a great opportunity to spend some quality time together and get him away from the X-Box.

This is the latest segment of the South Salado Creek Greenway. This segment is about 2.3 miles long one-way. One of the great features is that it is mostly shaded by all the trees growing along the creek.

From South Side Lions Park we headed north across the creek over a new bridge. There is a few slopes, but nothing a beginning cyclist can’t handle. There is one road crossing at Roland Ave. you have to watch for, especially if you have inexperienced cyclists with you.

If your headed North on the trail and you come to the crossroad stop and look both ways and cross with caution. There is a hill on that road and cars can sneak up on you from a curve on the opposite side.

Once you cross the road you will be facing oncoming traffic, but doin't worry there is a concrete barrier between you and car traffic. Next, you will cross the creek on a new bridge and continue north.

There is a little trail construction still happening on some of the bridges along the trail so be aware that you will encounter people working along the route. You eventually come to Comanche County Park where the trail winds and meanders around and ends up in Covington County Park next door, where this segment comes to an end just before it goes under the Rigsby Ave. bridge.

We took a water break there and read all the signs regarding the Greenway and history of the park. We got a wealth of information about the area and the creek.

The Hours are: Sun up to Sundown.
